Have you ever looked at the member ID cards issued by different insurances and wished they were easier to read? UHIN aims to do just that by standardizing the arrangement of information on member ID cards. This means that if you are looking for a piece of information—the employer name, for example— it will appear at the same location on the card no matter which Utah payer provides the insurance. The same principle holds true for the other basic fields like plan name, cardholder ID, and co-pays. (See Fig.1)

This standardization is part of an overall effort to simplify the healthcare process. Having information in consistent places on member ID cards will simplify the billing process. Providers who currently deal with many different and confusing formats will be able to increase their efficiency and accuracy. After the new format becomes widespread, communities are considering an eventual move towards a swipe card technology that will assist the provider with electronic queries (this enhancement remains in the distant future).
Payers do not yet have an exact timeline for the rollout of the new design, but those dates will be published as soon as they become available. Keep an eye on UHIN news articles and any communications from your payer, because they may contain updates on this subject.
If you would like any additional information, the entire standard has been published on the UHIN website. You can see the page by clicking the following link:
