5010 Transition

If you have a Practice Management System…

Practice Management Systems are billing software that manages day-to-day operations of a medical practice. Such software frequently allows users to capture patient demographics, schedule appointments, maintain lists of insurance payers, performing billing tasks, and generate reports. If you use something like this as part of your billing process, use the steps below to prepare for the 5010 transition.

1. Contact your Practice Management Vendor (the company that provides support for your software). Ask them the following questions:

a. Will my software be 5010 compliant by the January 1, 2012 cutoff date?

b. When will you begin testing? (Testing may begin as early as October 2010, and at the latest should start by July of 2011.)

Note: If you would like to be kept in the loop, one way is to offer to be a Beta tester with your Practice Management Vendor.

c. Will my software be able to toggle between 4010 and 5010 while I am testing with different payers?

2. Once your software is ready for testing, contact UHIN (877-693-3071) to set up the UHIN 5010 Acceptance Testing (up to HIPAA level 2).

a. Once UHIN 5010 Acceptance Testing is successfully completed, you can work with individual payers and/or clearinghouses.
