5010 Testing with UHIN
5010 testing is required for all active trading partners. If you send more than one type of transaction (i.e. Professional, Institutional, etc.) you will need to check each type for compliance. If you would like to complete the 5010 acceptance testing through a different system or facility, please provide UHIN with the company name and testing verification, or send a file through UHIN’s testing tool for verification.
Important: once you have been given the go-ahead to test through UHIN, UHIN will provide access to the user acceptance testing environment for a period of 14 calendar days.
How do I know I am ready for Testing?
(NOTE: UHINt 2.5 and Proclaim keyboard entry users do not need to test at this time.)
1. Is my Practice Management/EMR vendor 5010 compliant?
- Have I completed any necessary testing with my vendor?
- Have I verified that my software is sending the 5010 errata versions? (If you are unsure, ask your vendor if the errata version number is in the claim header.)
2. If there are multiple providers in my office with multiple Trading Partner Numbers, is each one ready to go?
3. Some 5010 changes affect data entry procedures. Do the appropriate people understand these changes? Have the changes been made to the files I will use for testing?
4. Each member has a 14 calendar day window. Do I have the time, knowledge, and/or correct personnel to devote to testing within those 14 days?
What do I need to do?
1. Contact the UHIN Helpdesk (877-693-3071).
- Testing will occur in the User Testing (Sundance) environment. If you do not know how to access this environment, be sure to ask the Helpdesk when you call.
2. Send at least 10 transactions to “Testing EDI files” for each transaction type (837I, 837P, 270, etc.) you want to test.
- Use “HT005555-002” as the receiver ID.
3. Except when testing very large files (10MB or more), you should receive reports immediately.
- The reports will provide feedback for all levels of errors and warnings. However, UHIN will approve you for production permission if your files pass HIPAA level 2—out of seven total levels—and requirements specific to Medicare. This covers the basics, but note that some payers may edit at a higher level.
- If you need a copy of your report or have questions, UHIN will have access to the testing results.
4. Continue sending test files until the reports show as “passed”.
Tip:
To ensure that your test claims are validated against the correct edits, make sure to send claims for a variety of payers. For example: if you do business with Medicare, make sure to test a Medicare claim so that any edits specific to Medicare are included in your UHIN test report.
Once your files pass, UHIN will notify both you and the payer that you are ready for payer-specific testing. Keep in mind that not all payers will be ready for testing at the same time (check the UHIN 5010 Resource Center for payer availability.) When you pass UHIN acceptance testing, your Trading Partner Number will receive 5010 production permissions.
